Rumble & Roar – Tapped Maple Wine Rack

Rumble & Roar

Tapped Maple Wine Rack

The Remember Alex Project

We want to introduce you to Alex.  She suffered from an aggressive form of colon cancer but ultimately passed from bone marrow failure due to secondary bone cancer.  Alex was 26 and her legacy is one of an amazing spirit and participant in society.

While undergoing chemo and surgery, she kept her view on the future; taking online courses at Ryerson, crocheting and volunteering.  At the same time applying for employment and creating a blog about her journey.  While finishing her degree at York University she was a manager at Real Sports.  She also worked with the Discovery Channel show Cash Cab.

In her first 6 months of treatment she applied for and got a job at ME to WE.  This was a special place for her, expanding her community of support. While at the same time contributing to students’ lives and communities around the world. Of all her jobs this one was her favorite for sure.

Developing a relationship with the founder of The Remember Alex Project, Carole Ito, Alex’s mom has been a blessing for us.  Learning about Alex has moved us to become involved in a small way.  We have created a piece that we are donating to support their upcoming fundraising event.

Upcoming Event – Rumble & Roar

The fourth edition of Rumble & Roar will be September 8, 2018. Their next event will be held at the Eastminster United Church, 310 Danforth Ave, Toronto, Ontario.  To learn more about it you can click here, please go check it out.  If you want to receive an invite for your team to participate send an email.  If you would like to make a donation, it can be done here.

Since 2015 the Remember Alex Project, through Rumble & Roar has raised over $40,000 for WE.  This years’ fundraiser will support a WE Sacred Circle Program. This unique program aims to empower indigenous youth in the northern Ontario community of Moose Factory.  It will begin to run in August. This leadership program will educate and empower youth, while connecting them with their elders and leaders. This is a 3 year initiative for The Remember Alex Project to support key follow ups.

The Story of Our Piece – Tapped Maple Wine Rack

We frequent several lumber mills in search of our undefined products. When we spot something unique we purchase it.  In this case, some Canadian-sourced, tapped maple.  While milling the lumber, the drill holes from tapping sap became evident and pronounced revealing some spalting which is illness or infection caused by fungi. This spalting manifests itself in beautiful grain patterns and colouration.

When thinking about what to make for this project, the tapped maple spoke to us; demonstrating natures beauty, spalting, beauty cased by illness.  These rough pieces eventually told us what they should become and which project they should be used in.

What a beautiful connection!  In our minds, the point of this project started with the discovery of rough maple lumber.  It is reinforced by the idea of beauty created as a result of illness.  This is what spoke loudest to us, out of such illness can come much beauty!

It is our great honor to offer this piece in the fundraising endeavors of the Remember Alex Project.

Thanks and check out Rumble & Roar in support of the Remember Alex Project.

Charcuterie Custom Cheese Board / Cheese Presentation Board

The Charcuterie / Custom Cheese Board Story

Recently we had the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind custom cheese board for return clients. In 2016 we completed a coffee table (Project# R16W07CM) for them.  They came back requesting that we make them a custom cheese board for use when entertaining friends.  The only instruction they gave was ‘make it different’.

Unique Shape Board

Of course, this presents a challenge because our concept of ‘different’ is probably, wait for it, different than others.  But, we relish these opportunities to be unique and make use of our creative sides!  We went to work and came up with 3 options for them to choose from.

Definition

Just so we are 100% clear, these are presentation boards and not designed to be used as cutting boards.

The client’s saw them and it was a pause, then silence as they looked them over… Then, success! One of the client’s said “this isn’t anything like I expected at all”.  It was nice to see such a small project have such a big impact.  In the end, they loved them all and couldn’t decide between them, so they purchased 2 of the 3 boards leaving us with an orphan.

La Jolie Cheese Shop

Enter, La Jolie Cheese Shop in Aurora, ON!  La Jolie Cheese Shop are experts in cheese that will make any day special. We take great pride in our work and are happy to tell you that we are lucky enough to have the orphan board on display in their shop.  If you are in the Newmarket, Aurora, Richmond Hill area drop in and have a look, 2 Orchard Heights Boulevard, Unit 9, Aurora.

While there you will be amazed at their selection of cheeses, knowledge of each of them as well as their amazing customer service.  We encourage you to make a point of going to their shop, checking out our board and taking some cheese home to enjoy.  You can even purchase the board if you like!

The base!

At the foundation of every cheese board presentation is the board itself!  We get a kick out of using something unique and completely different?

What attracts us to this piece is the grain patterns.  The flare & curl, the quilting affect that it displays as well as some burl.  Adding to it’s beauty is the live edge and the interesting shapes that mother nature designed.

As we expressed earlier, this board is not designed to be used as a cutting board.  We have finished it for use as a presentation board only.

Warning!

While at La Jolie we purchased some cheese!  One of our selections was Black Cow Cheddar.  It is absolutely delicious but we have to warn you, it somehow morphs into a spider!  It’s awesome!

What Is Aether

Aether Creations - Favicon

So, we get asked 2 questions about Aether Creations;

Where did you get the name?

What is it?

The short, technical answers are as follows;

  • Where does it come from?
    • Aether comes from Greek mythology.
    • It is also known as the 5th element after earth, water, fire and ice.
  • What is it?
    • It is defined by Wikipedia as “the material supposed to fill the region of the universe above the terrestrial sphere.”

Sorry you asked?!

At the risk of sounding too ethereal, the name Aether Creations and its branding come from trying to understand the word creativity.

  • Creativity
    • Wikipedia defines it as “the phenomenon whereby something new and somehow valuable is formed”.
    • It’s not a physical property.

We measure creativity as the instinctual reaction one has to what you see.  It happens when clients see their  piece finished and installed.  It begins with the long pause while they take it in, followed by looking at it from different angles, then returning to the original position.  The reaction can be smiles, head nods, as well as hands over the mouth, handshakes and in some cases hugs!

It’s not the words they use to describe the piece, but instead just the instinctual reaction to it.

This Is Us!

Our company philosophy is simple: be different.

Fred R Barnard explained it best when he coined the phrase “a picture is worth ten thousand words”.

This picture describes us!

We strive to be different and as a result create one-of-a-kind pieces that are beautiful and functional.

Process

  • Because each of our projects is different, it makes us exceptional at listening and understanding client requirements.
  • Function, design and aesthetic are critical criteria in ensuring the finished piece fits the existing environment.
  • Since Client Care defines our approach to each project, it’s an integral part of our company.

Projects

  • What drives us?  The beautiful outcomes achieved using manufactured (defined) and natural (undefined) products.
  • Each project, no matter the size or scope, will include elements of creativity.
  • The pride and ownership we take in our projects forms our value.

People

  • Because we value the instinctual reaction of our clients to their projects, it serves to keep us inspired and creative resulting in new and exciting projects.
  • It makes us search for the next project.

Finally, we invite you to contact us with your project ideas and create a one of a kind piece for your space.

We welcome your feedback and you can follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see exclusive images of products.
