MAPLE BURL LIVE EDGE COFFEE TABLE – TORONTO

Background

We were contacted by this client with a desire to have a coffee table made for their living space.  They live in a condo downtown Toronto and have somewhat limited space.  After seeing the space and deciding on appropriate dimensions we got to work and made a beautiful table.

Inspiration

We had purchased some maple burl pieces which we had in the shop waiting to tell us what they wanted to be and this particular piece screamed coffee table.  Taking ques from their current décor we designed a simple metal frame for function as well as beauty.

Our Materials

Top – Made from a beautiful slab of maple burl. It has the burl edge present and some amazing grain patterns including spalting.

Legs – We used 1” x 1” metal tube cut, welded, ground and cleaned to form the support structure.

Our Process

Top – We cleaned up the live edge portions using various tools to make sure that all the loose bark was removed.  Exposed the burl edge as much as possible as it’s mother natures work at her best.

Sanded the top and applied a hand rubbed finish to enhance the beauty of the slab.

Legs – The leg frame was designed in such a way as to provide a solid platform but, also well placed connection points between the metal legs and the wood top. We left the legs raw as the client was interested to see what some surface rust might look like. Once they are happy with the finished product we will take the coffee table back to the shop and clear coat it.
