LIVE EDGE CORNER SHELVES – PICTON

Background

Continuing our work with BSW Design www.bswdesign.ca they have requested three live edge shelves be completed to specific dimensions that we will not be installing.  They are going to be installed in the client’s home in Picton, Ontario.

This is always a bit of a challenge but we have designed some metal brackets for each shelf that will be drilled and screwed into studs onsite by the home owner.

We are pleased to have earned the project and work is underway.  The challenge is using a live edge piece of maple, cutting three shelves out of it and making it as easy to install as possible.

Inspiration

The client had undertaken a kitchen renovation and had a corner space they wanted to utilize requiring some shelves for display purposes.  We had a chink of live edge sugar maple at the shop that became the source for the shelves.

Our Materials

Corner Shelves:  slab of 1.5” thick live edge sugar maple

Mounting Bracket:  made using 16 gauge sheet metal

Our Process

  1. Drew several shelf layouts. We took our time at this stage to make sure we took advantage of the natural live edge so the front of the shelves would be beautiful.
  2. Removed all loose debris from the live edge then hand planed the shelves to flat.
  3. Sanded to 220 grit then applied semi gloss finish
  4. Cut and bent two metal brackets per shelf for ease of install
  5. Packaged the shelves and brackets for delivery to BSW Design
  6. Client ‘loves the shelves, and the live edge is so nice’
