GOLD HANGING SHELF – METAL – AURORA

Background:

We were approached by a design consultant, Jackie Venneri of Style It With Jackie to see if we could design and make a hanging shelf unit she was wanting for one of her clients.  The critical criteria for this project was matching a gold color that was currently being used in the kitchen design.

Feel free to email Jackie or call (905) 717–3000.  You can visit their website here.

The client had renovated their home and designed an opening in a wall over the sink allowing natural light to flood the space through a window.  We had an onsite visit to discuss overall design ideas and where the unit was to be hung.  The main idea was to duplicate a gold color that was currently imbedded in the design and color scheme.

We are pleased to have earned the project and work is underway.  This one is going to be interesting as it is the most delicate design and build, in terms of materials, we have undertaken.

Inspiration

The client had utilized a specific gold color in their kitchen design which they wanted matched.  The shelf design ques came from the lights they currently have installed, they were made using 1/4” metal bar stock and provided us with a clear direction for design and color.  The frame was to be metal with two glass shelves.

Our Materials

Structure:             3/8” metal square bar

Glass Frame:        made from 1″ strips of 18 gauge, satin coat sheet metal

Glass:                      ¼” thick, polished edges and tempered

Our Process

  1. Utilized 3/8” metal bar stock to manufacture two hanging ends that would capture shelves
  2. Because of the small dimension of the metal we had to mig weld it utilizing a shop made jig to hold the pieces square and straight for welding. Although the unit is dead square and true the bulkhead won’t be dictating we build in some allowance for it to hang level.
  3. Made two ‘pans’ for the glass to sit in providing stability and strength to the glass shelves
  4. Designed two ‘feet’ that will be attached to the bulkhead. The rest of the unit will ‘hang’ from them.
  5. This one was painted at our shop as a result of having to match the gold color. After much experimenting and samples we were able to duplicate it perfectly.
  6. Deliver and install in the client’s kitchen.
