Tapped Maple Wine Rack

The Remember Alex Project

We want to introduce you to Alex.  She suffered from an aggressive form of colon cancer but ultimately passed from bone marrow failure due to secondary bone cancer.  Alex was 26 and her legacy is one of an amazing spirit and participant in society.

While undergoing chemo and surgery, she kept her view on the future; taking online courses at Ryerson, crocheting and volunteering.  At the same time applying for employment and creating a blog about her journey.  While finishing her degree at York University she was a manager at Real Sports.  She also worked with the Discovery Channel show Cash Cab.

In her first 6 months of treatment she applied for and got a job at ME to WE.  This was a special place for her, expanding her community of support. While at the same time contributing to students’ lives and communities around the world. Of all her jobs this one was her favorite for sure.

Developing a relationship with the founder of The Remember Alex Project, Carole Ito, Alex’s mom has been a blessing for us.  Learning about Alex has moved us to become involved in a small way.  We have created a piece that we are donating to support their upcoming fundraising event.

This leadership program will educate and empower youth, while connecting them with their elders and leaders. This is a 3 year initiative for The Remember Alex Project to support key follow ups.

The Story of Our Piece – Tapped Maple Wine Rack

We frequent several lumber mills in search of our undefined products. When we spot something unique we purchase it.  In this case, some Canadian-sourced, tapped maple.  While milling the lumber, the drill holes from tapping sap became evident and pronounced revealing some spalting which is illness or infection caused by fungi. This spalting manifests itself in beautiful grain patterns and colouration.

When thinking about what to make for this project, the tapped maple spoke to us; demonstrating natures beauty, spalting, beauty cased by illness.  These rough pieces eventually told us what they should become and which project they should be used in.

What a beautiful connection!  In our minds, the point of this project started with the discovery of rough maple lumber.  It is reinforced by the idea of beauty created as a result of illness.  This is what spoke loudest to us, out of such illness can come much beauty!

It is our great honor to offer this piece in the fundraising endeavors of the Remember Alex Project.

Thanks and check out Rumble & Roar in support of the Remember Alex Project.
