POWDER COATED METAL & WESTERN RED CEDAR GATE – AURORA

Background

This client has a typical wooden gate that is several years old.  It started pulling away from the brick wall and would fall over in a wind storm, and had it strapped together so it would stay up.  They have a pool so the gate must lock and have self-closing hinges.  Although utilitarian in nature they wanted something beautiful as well.

Wants/Needs:

  1. Need a gate to span more than 90” required so that any equipment can get to the backyard should it be required. This gate is the only access point on the property.
  2. Need to use it on a regular basis to get in and out.
  3. Want something that looks modern and clean but is functional.

Inspiration

The blend of defined (manufactured) and undefined (natural) products continues to drive us.  The problem we had to solve was the width of the gate 90” and allowing for equipment to go in and out if required.  So the gate in a gate idea was hatched!

Our Materials

Frame Structure – made using 2” metal tube powder coated

Person Gate – made using 1”  metal tube

Decorative Panels – designed in panels that can easily be removed and replaced with something else if desired

Clips – made from 18 gauge sheet metal, bent and welded to support frame

Our Process

  • 1. We used 2” metal tube for the gate frame and 1” metal tube for the swinging gate door.  The frame structure spans the width and has a man gate designed into it for ease of use.
  • 2. Our client settled on using western red cedar for the decorative panels to play off the matte black powder coated frame and door.  We cut the boards to length and grain matched them one panel to the next to achieve a clean cohesive look.
  • 3. Finished the decorative panels, ready for installation in openings designed into the frame and opening gate door.
  • 4. The old gate was a typical 2 piece wood structure that did function at some point in its’ life but no longer would open or close.  You can see how the client had a hold down strap around the two pieces so it didn’t fall over.
  • 5. One of the problems was that over time the part of the gate anchored to the brick wall of the house had come loose.  The anchor bolts were rusted and broken, they added some other fasteners to try and fix it but was beyond repair.
  • 6. After removing the old gate and getting rid of any leftover fasteners sticking out of the brick wall we marked centre lines for the ‘G’ clips and fastened them to the brick wall and fence post on either side of where the gate is installed.
  • 7. The frame part of the gate gets lifted into the ‘G’ clips and sits in them.  They will be locked into place from the back side of the gate so that it can’t be removed making it permanent.
  • 8. The gate frame is installed as well as two of the decorative panels the swinging door is not in place as of yet.
