CUSTOM WOOD DINING TABLE – NEWMARKET
Background
This family had just completed a renovation that extended their kitchen into the dining room, harmonizing the two spaces. They wanted a beautiful unique & custom piece that would withstand every day use. They wanted it to be bar top height with taller chairs making it modern and funky.
Inspiration – ‘We want a dining table and oh – it has to be walnut!’.
Aside from the look and feel of the table what we like most is our ability to use it. It’s not only beautiful and meets our design but we just aren’t afraid of denting or staining it, we are 100% comfortable using it.
Our Materials
Top – The approach was to laminate several pieces of lumber together to make the top, allowing the clients to pick unique pieces and put them together in a visually interesting pattern, especially evident on the end grain. The finished dimensions are 5’ long, 3-1/2’ wide and 1-1/2” thick.
Legs – Made using 4” tube metal, they were set at an angle in the corner of the table adding secondary visual interest.
Skirt – Made using 1×3 metal tube which not only provided ample support for the top but added a depth of design in the overall look of the table.
Our Process
The frame is made from two parts, the skirt and the legs. These were developed with perspective in mind, the dimensions of the top, relative to the dimension of the skirt, relative to the dimension of the square legs all play off each other.
The edges were softened by knocking them off with a hand plane then sanded over. To add further design interest we installed the four legs at an angle to the skirt softening the square corners matching the soft edges of the top.
We left the metal frame pieces unfinished and used a matte finish on the top to play off each other without being too matchy – matchy. The piece blends with the room aesthetics and renovation while housing all five family members easily with room to spare.
This table could be described as a ‘standard’ project but when people see it they discover the design features, beautiful grain in the top, the matte finish and the bar top height it all adds up to be a wonderful piece.
