CUSTOM KITCHEN BAR – GLASS & METAL – TORONTO

Background

The clients had just put the finishing touches on a main floor renovation of their home in Newmarket. They wanted to highlight an open spacious wrap around kitchen design with the outstanding theme being function.  From the coffee bar, to food prep area, 6 burner gas range and plating area all the components were designed to ‘work’.  This kitchen was designed for entertaining but was missing a space for friends to gather and enjoy.

Inspiration – ‘We want a bar top for everyday use and also for when we cook and entertain our friends’.

We had no idea it would look this great and match our home so perfectly, we use it almost every day now!  Whenever somebody sees it they always ask where we had it done because they have never seen on like it before, needless to say we are proud of it. Thanks Aether!

Our Materials

Top – we used ½” thick glass, 5’ long x 2” wide matching the proportion of the kitchen.

Skirt – made from 1” x 3” steel tube powder coated flat black

Legs – three legs are made using 2” tube steel with a fourth made from 4”.

Our Process

This piece reflects the modern, clean lines of the current kitchen and was purpose built from defined, manufactured products.  The blend of metal and glass materials adds to the ‘look’ and appears as if it was part of the initial kitchen design.

Starting with the top, the glass has a soft green tint on the under side that compliments the wall paint color.  As well, the under side of the glass is etched and creates an opaque look, you can’t see through it.

The skirt was welded to the legs using 1” × 3” metal tube which not only provides ample support for the top but adds a depth of design in the overall look of the bar.  It was installed with the 3” dimension visible and is set back from the edge of the glass as well as the legs.  The different dimensions get along with each other well.

The legs were interesting in that only three of them come to rest in the floor while the fourth comes to rest of the end of the stone counter top.  The three legs on the floor are matched with 2” steel tube incorporating the skirt between them.  The fourth leg is made using 4” tube metal and was designed using the larger dimension in order to house an electrical receptacle.

The frame was powder coated flat black and blends with the modern colors and large format, grey tiles chosen for the floor.  Not only does it fit from an aesthetic perspective but its’ design reflects the overall ‘work’ theme of the kitchen.

We are pleased with the aesthetics of the piece in the space as well as the complete finished project!
