CUSTOM FIRE PIT – GLASS & METAL – AURORA

Background

As part of an overall backyard plan these clients had their old deck ripped out and redone.  Part of the plan called for a stepdown sitting area to one side where they were going to place new furniture and a gas fire pit.  All went as planned until they tried to find a fire pit.  After searching around at other product options they gave up on the idea because nothing would fit the space.  The typical fire tables wouldn’t fit within the dimensions of the sitting area.

They found Aether online, contacted us and after the initial meeting decided to contract us to make the family a fire pit that would suit the space.

Inspiration – “We imagined a gas fire pit for our family to gather around and enjoy.  This sounded simple but became a challenge to find a piece that fit into our deck design.  After searching the typical retail outlets, we gave up on the idea as we couldn’t find anything that fit, then we met Arther, they stepped in with several initial ideas and concepts which were unlike anything we imagined.”

We are so excited about using our fire pit, not only does it function in the way we wanted but the design makes it.  The way it wraps around the corner of the sitting area naturally creates a focal point.  We often sit out enjoying our fire and think this wouldn’t have been possible without Aether.  We really enjoy it!

Our Materials

Centre Post – we designed a ‘spine’ using  2” tube metal

Burner Frames – we used 1” × 3” square tube metal tube to support the burners.

Fittings – working with the gas installer we made them an integral part of the design.

Our Process

This ‘fire pit’ project was an interesting challenge for us.  There were several issues that lead to our design;

  • The fire pit couldn’t take up sitting space, eliminating typical retail products (tables).
  • The clients had already spent a lot of money on the new deck and budget was a concern
  • We had to work with the existing design.

The piece was designed around the idea of using a ‘spine’, fixed to one corner of the deck, which holds two modular burner frames keeping them off the deck and out of the sitting area.  It naturally creates a focal point for the sitting area as well.

Other concerns were centred around gas supply and required fittings to make the burners function.  Working with the gas guy, Aether stepped in and helped install a flexible line to the location of the fire pit.   Since the metal spine and burner frames were powder coated, flat black, we took the required fittings and made them part of the spine.  They all match the flat black color except for the on/off levels which are red.  Located on the back of the frames they aren’t visible when sitting on the deck but stand out from the frame for ease of use.  The design met both the clients’ expectations as well as the practicalities of the gas hook up and gas company.

The metal frame kind of disappears allowing the stainless steal burners to become the focal point of the sitting area.  The finished piece is unique and completely functional while resolving the space issue faced by the family.  It not only fits the current design of the deck but the smiles on the client’s faces says it all!
